“James “Chicken Scratch” Johnson”
2013 – Teddy’s Juke Joint – Zachary, LA
From Slim Harpo to Kenny Neal, the “Chicken Scratch” is a style that graces countless sides from the region’s greatest artists. And it’s all because of one quiet, unassuming man: Baton Rouge’s James Johnson.
Johnson developed the "chicken scratch" sound while playing with Slim Harpo and was credited with popularizing the technique. He used discarded guitar parts and other materials to create his own unique instruments, including "Chikantars," and also crafted diddley bows and cigar box guitars.
This photo was captured at Johnson’s release of his first solo album at the age of 74. My signed copy of this album is one I treasure the most.

“I don’t know why it’s taken so long,” he says with a laugh. “I guess I was just busy playing with other people and making them sound good.” - James Johnson
